In many cities the stoop is not just an architectural typology, but also an institution. Within a simple construction, just a series of steps leading to the front door, acts as a place for interaction, relaxation, observance, a micro government for the block where people congregate for news and gossip. Seems Like A Good Day For The Stoop attempts to examine and recreate that phenomenon, detaching the stoop from the building. I designed a pressure fitted portable stoop consisting of 20 pieces, no tools needed. Within 10 minutes a fully functional stoop can be assembled indoors or outdoors.

Is the building essential for a series of steps to attain the properties of a stoop? Is it the location or the people inhabiting the structure that create the environment? It must be a mixture of both; an ownership and history of the architecture must exist. Therefore a portable stoop, a roaming community center, inherently will not succeed without that ownership, a known and established community.

A literal ownership has been assigned to the 20 pieces of the portable stoop. Every piece has been given to one family member or friend as a gift and social contract, that when needed the pieces will be temporarily returned to reassemble the stoop. With every piece numbered and assigned the parts are shipped to each participant with a limited edition print detailing the project outlines and the 19 others involved. Shipping the pieces inevitably adds the additional layer of history. Without any crate or box the parts are mailed as is, so shipping labels, dirt, marks, and handprints will begin to give a history and life to the stoop as it moves back and forth between itʼs owners.

<description>Wood, Metal Tubing, Chalkboard Paint, Chalk
2011
Installation
In collaboration with Laurel Bancroft for the GFRY Studio

In 1973, Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship began a decades long campaign of distrust between the citizens of Chile. Even between neighbors, the suspicion and uncertainty of government loyalties dismantled the core of many Chilean communities. This condition of incertitude continued long after a democratic system was introduced. Mending community ties was a gradual process, but in 2010 when an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit the center of the country, residents had no choice but to rely and depend on neighbors again. Some of the worst damage occurred in the colonial city of Talca, 380 kilometers south of the capital city of Santiago.

The GFRY studio visited Talca in the summer of 2011 and was lucky enough to be provided with the keys to a community center, the Sede Social, in Paso Moya -- a small industrial neighborhood in the southern region of Talca. The task was to help re-establish the feeling of trust and community in Paso Moya, and having access to a neutral location within the neighborhood was an important first step.
The street front of the center is lined with a black iron fence intended to provided security and protection for the children playing in the front yard. The project proposed by architect Laurel Bancroft and designer Ivan Martinez was informed by this specific space.

The Message Board project was intended to re-purpose the fence as a space for interaction and not just exclusion. A grid of 35 blackboard painted plates were affixed to a new steel grid bolted to the original fence, creating a wall of writable surface. Additionally, a stencil of the neighborhood was painted on, highlighting every block and lot in the Paso Moya area. There is now a fixed location where residents can leave messages for each other, even directly by pointing to an exact neighbor’s lot. The vital feature for the message board is having a known, unchanging site. In the case of another disaster, the blackboards can serve as a rallying point for news and updates.

The night in which the project was unveiled, the Paso Moya community wasted no time in relaying their hopes and dreams for the future of Talca. Within minutes, the blackboards were filled with messages of good will to their fellow neighbors, optimistically looking to mend the divide they’ve experienced for countless years.

Archive, Object, In Progress

In the summer of 2011 I traveled to Talca, Chile, a colonial town in the center of the country destroyed by a massive earthquake the year prior. My visit came at a time when the residents still wrestled with the loss of their possessions and homes. One of my main concerns as a foreigner from the United States was the expectation and inability to provided exact replacements for these objects, although this was not my intention. My project OBJECTO LUGAR MEMORIA had two objectives. One was to catalog and archive the objects and spaces lost from the earthquake. Second, and more importantly, was to archive the memories associated with the object and or space. My belief is that the losses of a material object or space will eventual lead to the loss of a memory. We are constantly being reminded of our past by the surroundings we keep, and perhaps we don’t need the original “thing”, just a reminder, a breadcrumb.

The project took place in Paso Moya, a small neighborhood in Talca. I traveled the streets with a portable casting kit and one basic building material, cement. (Many of the community members expressed how they would like their future homes to be made from the solid and reliable characteristics of cement, instead of the traditional adobe technique.) As I met with the residents we sat, ate, and talked for hours, at times multiple days, about the earthquake, their experience, and their loss. At the end of the visit, and using their help, I would cast a fully functional lamp made from concrete. My expectation is that although I cannot replace what they lost, I could provide a reminder, a breadcrumb, to those memories. The lamp, as they use it from day to day, will remind them of our conversation, which will in turn remind them of the missing object/space, and finally to those connected memories.

Still Remains is an architectural project which catalogs abandoned buildings and restructures them into a fictitious urban city through the development of city plans, a physical 1/60 scale model and an interactive virtual landscape.

The objective of this project is to examine the amount of desolate structures that punctuate our neighborhoods and reconfigure them into a symbol of potential. The buildings within the new city will include ruins from past cultures, unfinished construction projects, and buildings destroyed through natural and man-made disasters. Through creating a fictitious urban plan of forgotten buildings I will examine the magnitude of empty structures that exist.

The hope is that these vacant structures will be rebuilt and inhabited so they can serve the purpose in which was intended. Questions can be asked to why that may or may not be possible, or how to revitalize such blight, in the end an awareness of our architectural landscape and its failures will be gained.

Online environment

During the research I plan to investigate buildings in select cities and continue to expand worldwide to collect data and photos on these structures both residential and commercial. The methods in creating a tangible 1/60 scale city will follow technical and traditional procedures to urban planning. As a factory in Detroit, Michigan becomes resituated within the new city it will be given space in the Industrial District, just as a condominium from Miami, Florida will live in the Residential District.

Installation 18'x 5' x 5'
In collaboration with Matthew Cox

We were given the chance to make an on-site installation in Homestead Florida, very close to the Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant. In fact the space we were given was just across the bay from the power plant that generates 1,400 million watts of electricity and supplies energy to about 450,000 homes. We thought about other sources of energy, and decided to try powering our own city with the most archaic method, wind. The anti-state-of-the-art windmill structure creates enough energy to power light and prerecorded sounds of the city, giving life to the street grid of
Miami-Dade within the body of the windmill.

Since Columbus first stepped onto the island of Cuba there has been a continuous rotation of violence and complacency. The steady stream of revolutions and uprising began in 1512 with the Taino tribe resisting the Spanish empire. Since then the repeated exploitation of Cubans has created the image of a people who willingly go along with the abuse, then forcibly change their scenario. Only to fall back into the revolving and stereotypical loop. The most recent being the 1959 revolution
and what will be the eventual collapse of it.

Those on either side of the Caribbean, who promote antiquated laws and rhetoric, basically...can't read the writing on the wall.

This project is part of a 75 print edition portfolio created by the different workshops within The Consejo Nacional de Talleres (National Printmakers' Council). The title of the portfolio is "Creando Fuerza (1)"
